Confused by Brasstown Bald
About North Georgia

I have always been confused by the term "bald" for a mountain. I know it means that the top has no trees, but is it a joke against bald men?

Various

Contributing Editor Richard Irby answers this one--

Bald does nor refer to lack of hair. Bald refers to the shiny spot which bald men generally sport on their heads. The Encyclopedia Britannica had a little problem with trying to explain that the Bald Eagle wasn't really bald. Lack of head hair is calvus or pilgarlic.
