Just a few minutes east of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is the historic downtown district of Marietta, Georgia. It is possible to spend quite a few hours checking out the unique collection of shops in the nearby area. Marietta, Georgia hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts are known for their quality, but the most unique lodging we found was The Blue and Gray Bed & Breakfast. About five minutes from the park, owners John and Connie Kone are local history buffs.
One excellent stop is the Marietta History Museum. Owned by the City of Marietta, the museum features exhibits on many of the facets of life in the early community. A section on The Civil War includes two Sherman's Neckties. Two local cemeteries, The Marietta National Cemetery and the Marietta Confederate Cemetery hold many of the men who died at Kennesaw Mountain and during the Atlanta Campaign. Also downtown is The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art. This museum combines its own collection with traveling exhibits to create a unique visit for any art lover. For additional information about the city of Marietta and things to do, stop by the 1898 vintage railroad depot, now the Marietta Welcome Center.
