About North Georgia

How many letters in the Cherokee language?

In your site under /people/ you state that there are 85 letters that make up the Cherokee alphabet. In your site under /history/ you state that it is 86. I believe 86 is the correct number. Thank you for the excellent information - I was helping my grandson for some homework about the Cherokee alphabet. Regards.

The final version of Sequoyah's Talking Leaves did have 86 sounds. The original version had 89 sounds, but as more people began to learn Sequoyah's work they pointed out that 4 of the sounds were duplicated. Sequoyah agreed, and removed them from his work. There were 85 sounds when the Talking Leaves was introduced to the Cherokee Nation, but only for a couple of days. Almost immediately, people realized that a single sound had been omitted, which Sequoyah added.
