A Walk in the Woods : Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail
by Bill Bryson

This is a tale of two overweight, over-the-hill former college chums who set out from Springer Mountain to regain their lost youth and find themselves along the way. Bill Bryson does a good job of mixing humor, pathos and a boyish sense of wonder in this solid entry in the "I found the Appalachian Trail" genre. We won't give away the ending, but the unique characters who they discover along the way are interesting fodder for Mr. Bryson's pen. We enjoyed this entry, and if you like a laid-back look at hiking the trail, we recommend it.

by Many

The Appalachian Trail Backpacker : Trail-Proven Advice for Hikes of Any Length
by Frank Logue, Victoria Logue

Authors and contributors to Welcome to North Georgia, to eliminate any bias we will quote Backpacker Magazine, "immensely valuable. . . . a book that has been needed for many years."
The Appalachian Trail - A Journey of Discovery
by Jan D. Curran

Spiritually moving work that delves into the writer's emotional changes along the trail.
The Appalachian Trail Reader
by David Emblidge (Editor)

A lively and evocative introduction to the national treasure, The Appalachian Trail Reader collects stories, poems, and essays that reflect this wildnerness trail across both time and geography. Contributors include Henry David Thoreau, James Dickey, Aldo Leonard, Washington Irving, Richard Wilbur, and many others.
