Recommended Reading

The Gallant Hood
by John P. Dyer

The author takes the name of the book from the words of The Yellow Rose of Texas rewritten by the men of the Texas Brigade for John Bell Hood. Mr. Dyer does a remarkable job in presenting the life of John Bell Hood from boyhood to death, rarely straying from the goal and getting the facts right. This is a well written entry that keeps the reader involved, a feat few authors achieve in historical non-fiction.

One excellent part is Dyer's summation of Hood's abilities, well-thought and well-written.

Hood's Texas Brigade : Its Marches Its Battles, Its Achievements
by Joseph Benjamin Polley

Mr. Polley has a winner. This book follows the men of the famous Texas Brigade and General John Bell Hood. Although Mr. Polley at times tends towards detail, his overall command of the subject leaves few questions unanswered. And the exciting tale of the Texas Brigade is one that is well suited to be written about. Better than most of this genre.
Shrouds of Glory : From Atlanta to Nashville : The Last Great Campaign of the Civil War
by Winston Groom

If you didn't know it, Groom is the author of Forrest Gump. At times nearly overwhelming in detail, the book covers John Bell Hood and Patrick Cleburne's final battles, The Nashville Campaign. While I find this particular episode a sad ending to the Confederacy, I found the book compelling. The detail is remarkable and Groom recreates the encounters vividly.
Paths to Victory : A History and Tour Guide of the Stone's River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Nashville Campaigns
by Jim Miles

A must-have for any traveler visiting this area and interested in the Civil War. A Georgia schoolteacher, Jim Miles is not only familiar with the area, he knows the Civil War. We recommend this solid entry
Civil War Sites in Georgia
by Jim Miles

Recent addition to Jim's work, Civil War sites covers many of the places featured on the Blue and Gray Trail, and mentions the Trail itself.
