Return to IndexBrian Hampton Tied inextricably by blood to Abraham Lincoln's wife, Mary Todd, Brian Hampton is also collaterally related to her brother-in-law, Benjamin Hardin Helm, who fell on the fields of Chickamauga. His fascination with the Civil War grew after college when he was told he was a distant cousin to Wade Hampton, planter, politician, and Lt. General of the Confederate Cavalry. Through his reading he realized "..a great deal of what I learned in both high school and college was simply a fantasy." While studying General Hampton he came across James Longstreet who, according to a high school teacher, had disobeyed orders and cost the Confederacy a battle. He became enthralled with Longstreet, seeking out and reading as much about the general as he could find.
His search for information inevitably brought him to the World Wide Web, where he found little about Longstreet but quite a bit about Jubal Early, Longstreet's major accuser. He set out to rectify the situation immediately, and the Longstreet Chronicles were born.
It is rare to find a web site whose achievements surpass those of the Longstreet Chronicles. Concentrating on a narrow(in web terms) subject, the site has brought together more than 100 primary documents about Longstreet. The General's own descendants have contributed. Others, including the Longstreet Society and the Longstreet Memorial Fund have helped and recognized his work. The site has also been recognized by the Discovery Channel and the History Channel Online for its content.
Brian spends his days working as a non-fiction free-lance writer and manages a retail wine and spirits shop. He puts his extensive Civil War knowledge to good use acting as one of five moderators of the soc.history.war.us-civil-war news group.
