I noticed that you state The Civil War ended in May, 1865. I have always thought that the war ended with the signing of the treaty at Appomattox in April, 1865. I know there was a mop-up operation after that, but it was nothing major. Why do you use the May, 1865 date?

When Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox it was a crippling blow to the Confederacy (which was probably doomed once Ulysses S. Grant and his lieutenants Sherman, Thomas and Hooker broke out of Chattanooga). It was not however, the end of the Confederacy, which continued to exist at least until the president was captured in Irwinville (May 10, 1865) or the last meeting of the Confederate Cabinet (Washington, Georgia, May 5, 1865).

President Andrew Johnson declared the war over when word reached him on May 10 that Davis had been captured.
