Callaway Gardens

Azalea Bowl at Callaway Gardens

We don't argue that Callaway Gardens is outside the realm of North Georgia, but how could we possibly pass up the opportunity to visit a garden in the Spring. We sent Pam Golden on a mission - take her digital camera and find something beautiful early in the season and she came back with some great photos of Callaway Gardens. Callaway Gardens opened as "Ida Cason's Gardens" in 1952 with a five-mile driving trail, golf, fishing and, of course, gardens. Over the next few years the park grew and eventually was renamed to Callaway Gardens. "Bo" Callaway ran for governor of Georgia in 1966 and won most of the votes, but not 50%, so the election was determined by the Georgia House, which chose Democrat Lester Maddox over the true winner of the race.

That, is politics, and not the subject of this page. Our topic is simple - springtime beauty in Georgia, and nothing says beauty better than the lovely azalea. Mentioned by William Bartram as being a native Georgian plant (at least the flame azalea so popular in the Blue Ridge Mountains), many of the azaleas in Callaway are imported.
